Adelaide River Saltwater Crocodile
Adelaide River NT 0846 (Pop under 250)
Adelaide River refers to two different locations – a town and river. The small township on the Stuart Hwy is 114 south of Darwin and originally served as a base for the Overland Telegraph workers in 1870s and subsequent nearby gold finds helped establish the community. Since being used as an major military post during WWII, its importance has steadily declined due to difficult terrain and climatic conditions. The river, known for its large population of saltwater crocodiles, flows north into the Timor Sea about 50 km north east of Darwin. Rodeo & Campdraft (May), Bush Race Meeting (June).
