Anglesea is located 111 km s-w of Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road’s eastern end. This appealing seaside resort was known as Swampy Creek and settled by squatters in 1830s. It was later renamed after the well known Welsh town. Angelesea offers excellent fishing, swimming, surfing and sailing for the many annual visitors who flock here.  Rock to Ramp Swim (Feb), Angelsea Art Show (June), Angair Wildflower & Art Show (Sept).

Great Ocean Road officially begins here extending west to Warrnambool, a distance of some 200 km offering some of Australia’s most magnificent coastline. Coogoorah Reserve, west of the Anglesea River. The name means ‘swampy reed creek’ and comprises an interesting wetland area of boardwalks, flora, fauna and local birdlife.

 

Nearby:
J.E. Loveridge Lookout (1 km west). Point Roadknight (2 km s-w) attractive headland protecting Anglesea beach and offering stunning ocean views. Anglesea Heathland Cliff Walk (north of Angelsea River) contains coastal forests and rugged cliff tops. Point Addis (10 km n-e) popular with surfers, swimmers and hang-gliders. The Koorie Cultural Walk leads through the Ironbard Basin on a 1 km loop track with a wealth of birdlife and a number of important indigenous sites. Aireys Inlet (11 km s-w)  small pretty town with a lighthouse and safe, sheltered beaches. Angahook-Lorne State Park (11 km s-w via Aireys Inlet) unique heathlands and great walking tracks.
