Arkaroola SA 5731 (Pop 30)
Arkaroola is a remote northern Flinders Ranges settlement and resort located 687 km north of Adelaide. Surrounded by stunning gorges, waterholes and ranges, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary (61 000 ha) was established in 1968 as a refuge for endangered wildlife species and today is also home to an observatory, weather station and seismograph station as about 200 small earthquakes are measured here each year. There are also 100 km of 4WD tracks (self-guided) notably the Echo Camp Backtrack. The settlement has good visitor facilities (camping, accommodation, store, fuel).

Vulkathana-Gammon Ranges NP (south) features 128 000 ha of picturesque gorges (Weetootla & Italowie), rugged ranges and countless waterholes. Bolla Bollana Smelter ruins & kiln (7 km n-w). Paralana Hot Springs (27 km n-e) Australia’s only active geyser where radioactive mineral-heated water bubbles through rocks. Not suitable for swimming.
