Balladonia WA 6443 (Pop 20)

Balladonia is a remote Golden Outback settlement located 935 km east of Perth. Sitting on the Eyre Hwy at the western end of the Nullabor Plain the 160 km expanse to nearest hamlet, Caiguna is one of the world’s longest stretches of straight road. Despite the harsh conditions and low rainfall, the area was first settled in 1880s and the lonely Balladonia Homestead (28 km east) stands in testament to the early pioneering spirit. Much of the arid surrounding desert is covered in ancient seashells dating back to when the area was in fact the ocean bed. Balladonia was the recipient of some space debris when NASA’s Skylab landed nearby in 1979.
