Balranald is situated on the Murrumbidgee River 859 km west of Sydney and 438 km n-w of Melbourne on the Great Western, Mid Western and Sturt Hwys. A busy service centre for surrounding areas producing wool, wheat, cattle and fruit and more recently viticulture, horticulture and tourism.

Heritage Park includes the old gaol and historical museum (open Wed and Fri am). The Art Gallery, Mayall St is located in the 120 year old Masonic Lodge. Free entry.

Homebush Hotel (1878) (25 km north). Moulamein, the oldest Riverina town includes the historic courthouse (1845) and Old Wharf (1850s). Yanga Lake (7 km s-e) for fishing and watersports. Mungo NP (150 km n-w) centre of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area and comprising a region of 240,000 ha of 17 dry lakes over 2 million years old. In 1969 Mungo Woman was discovered on Lake Mungo and estimated to be 40,000 years old. 5 years later, Mungo Man was discovered 300 m away at over 2 m in height and considered to be the world’s oldest example of ceremonial burial.
