Barrow Island WA
Barrow Island lies 50 km off WA’s north-west coast. Located between Onslow and Karratha, it covers 202 sq km (27 km long x 12 km wide) and became a nature reserve in 1910 to protect its diverse bird, flora & fauna species. The island is also home to several limestone caves supporting subterranean ecological species. Strict environmental policies have been established since oil and natural gas were discovered in 1960s. Barrow Island is Australia’s leading oil producing site and the Gorgon gas project is set to become the country’s largest resource producer.
