Beaufort Vic 3373

Beaufort is an historic Goldfields township and service centre 162 km n-w of Melbourne. Originally occupied by the Jajowarrung Aborigines, European settlement began in 1830s followed by gold discoveries in 1850s which continued until 1914. Today important industries include beef, wool, timber, quarrying and mining. Beaufort is situated between the larger centres of Ballarat and Ararat. Beaufort Lake, Lake Goldsmith, Mt Buangor State Park (2 600 ha) and Mt Coles State Forest (11 000 ha) all nearby.
