Birchip is a small pleasant Mallee wheat town located between the Wimmera & Murray districts. Sitting on the Sunraysia Hwy 317 km n-w of Melbourne and home to the ‘Big Red’ mallee bull, this area was one of Victoria’s last to be settled in 1880s. The construction of the Wimmera-Mallee channel system in the early 20th century (Southern Hemisphere’s largest water distribution system), helped establish Birchip as a significant wheat growing area. Tchum Lakes (8 km east) popular for watersports and surrounded by diverse native flora & fauna.
