Borroloola is a small Gulf of Carpentaria settlement sitting on both sides of the McArthur River 954 km s-e of Darwin. It is a thriving community and home to a number of assorted Aboriginal cultures including the Yanyuwa, Mara, Karaw and Kurdanji who live in camps around the town. As a 19th century port and frontier town, Borroloola gained a reputation as a haven for criminals and alcoholics until 1930s when it was almost deserted. Today it is popular for fishing and 4 wheel driving and despite being Aboriginal land, no entry permit is needed. Barramundi Classic (Easter), Rodeo (Aug).
