Bremer Island

Bremer Island sits 5 km off the coast of Nhulunbuy in n-e Arnhem Land (NT). Covering an area of about 16 sq km, it measures 8 km (length) x 3 km (width) and has just one small outstation, Gutjangan inhabited by the Yolngu Aboriginal clan, who call the island Dhambaliya, and number only about 25. There is a total alcohol ban but this does not apply to the small handful of tourists that may visit the island at any given time attracted by its rugged beauty, sea turtles and birdlife.
