Buchan is a small East Gippsland timber town renowned for its excellent caves. It is located 355 km east of Melbourne in the heart of sheep, cattle and timber country. Its name is thought to be Aboriginal and European settlement began here in 1840s. Foothills Festival (Jan), Canni Creek Races (Feb), Rodeo (Easter), Flowers & Craft Show (Easter).

Buchan Caves Reserve (north) comprises over 350 limestone caves with Fairy and Royal Caves being the easiest to access. Fairy Cave, discovered in 1907, is over 400 m long and features the ‘King’s Chamber’, ‘Jewel Chamber’, ‘Grotto’ and ‘Wedding Cake’. Royal Cave includes ‘Niagara Falls’ and ‘Font of the Gods’. The surrounding reserve has a walking track, campground, more than 40 bird species, kangaroos and a good flora variety. Buchan South (12 km s-w) features a black marble outcrop and ‘Stonehenge’ for gemstone collectors. Suggan Buggan (64 km north) site of an historic town with a schoolhouse (1865) and bounded by the spectacular Alpine NP.
