Burketown Qld 4830 (Pop 240)
Burketown is a remote Gulf Savannah settlement near the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is situated 2 112 km n-w of Brisbane and proclaims itself ‘Barramundi Capital of Australia’. Ill-fated explorers, Burke (after whom the town is named) and Wills first arrived in the area in 1860s but it was subsequent explorers looking for them who really helped develop the area. Burketown has an interesting museum and just north of town is the original Gulf Meatworks - a former thriving business. Beautiful Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) NP (215 km s-w) features Aboriginal rock-art, numerous World Heritage fossil sites and spectacular gorge scenery together with a vast diversity of flora & fauna. World Barramundi Championships (Easter), Campdraft & Gymkhana (May).
