Cann River is a small East Gippsland village located 446 km east of Melbourne. Sitting at the junction of the Cann River and Princes Hwy, it is noted for its proximity to a number of spectacular national parks. Its nearby granite cliffs are steeped in history as Point Hicks is believed to be the first land sighted by Europeans on Australia’s east coast. Sawmilling and tourism sustain the community.

(30 km north) a rugged and remote 35 000 ha park of sandstone gorges containing ancient fossil footprints) and rare fauna & flora species. Croajingolong NP (27 km south via Point Hicks) covers 87 500 ha and spans 100 km of wilderness coastline. Protecting areas of lush rainforest, heath lands, granite peaks and estuaries, there are beautiful bush tracks, safe river swimming and good fishing and canoeing conditions. Historic lighthouse at Point Hicks. Bemm River (35 km s-w) situated on Syndenham Inlet and noted for its excellent bream fishing, waterflowers and pretty beaches.
