Carpentaria Qld 4823

Carpentaria is a tiny Gulf Country locality in the Shire of Carpentaria near the Gulf of Carpentaria. The shire covers almost 70 000 sq km and is accessed by the Savannah Way (1) from Cairns and the Burke Developmental Rd (83) from Cloncurry. There are only two towns within this shire - Normanton (administration centre) & Karumba (fishing port). The Gulf of Carpentaria was first discovered by the Dutch in 17th century with more extensive British exploration carried out in 19th century.
