Chillagoe is a remote former mining town situated between the Tropical North and Outback regions. It is located 1 830 km n-w of Brisbane and west of the Atherton Tablelands. Early pastoralists settled the area in 1880s followed by silver, lead and copper discoveries. Since the mine and smelter closed in 1940s, tourism has boosted the local economy with visitors drawn to the historic town, nearby limestone caves and Aboriginal rock art within the Chillagoe-Mungana Caves NP. Rodeo (May) Tablelands Country Music Festival (July).
