Clermont Qld 4721 (Pop 2 100)

Clermont is a picturesque Capricorn hinterland rural centre on the Gregory Hwy 939 km n-w of Brisbane. Gold and copper were discovered in 1860s but were short-lived. Sheep and cattle industries help sustain the local economy together with tourism. Clermont has a history of devastating floods resulting in the town being relocated to higher ground. There is a flood monument in Drummond St. Peak Range NP (50 km east) dramatic series of volcanic plugs. Clermont is surrounded by numerous state forests (Copperfield, Apsley, Blair Athol). Gold Festival (Aug).
