Colac, an historic town, is also a commercial & service centre in the Geelong region 149 km s-w of Melbourne. It sits on Lake Colac and a vast volcanic plain with numerous craters and cones still visible. The district’s rich soils have provided thriving dairying, agricultural & pastoral industries. Colac is also known as the ‘Gateway to the Otways’ nearby ranges & spectacular coastal national park to the south. Following indigenous occupation, Colac was settled in 1840s and the population was further enhanced by soldier settlement schemes following WW1. Red Rock Reserve & Lookout, Floating Island Flora & Fauna Reserve, numerous lakes and easy Great Ocean Rd access are all nearby.
