Coolum Beach Qld 4573 (Pop 18 000)
Coolum Beach is the largest coastal resort town on the Sunshine Coast’s southern end. It is located 135 km north of Brisbane and only 15 km south of famous Noosa. The name is said to derive from the Aboriginal word ‘kulum’ meaning ‘headless’ - no doubt referring to Mount Coolum which has no peak. Sugar cane remained the economy's mainstay until tourism took over around 1960s. The nearest highway is Bruce Hwy while the nearest airport is at Maroochydore (15 km south).
