Coonamble is a scenic Castlereagh River rural township 573 km n-w of Sydney. European settlement began in 1840s and the town continued to grow steadily until a disastrous fire destroyed many buildings in 1929. Coonamble acts as a service centre to NSW’s largest shire which covers almost 10 000 km and sits west of the stunning Warrumbungle Range. Important industries include wheat, cattle, sheep and horse stud farms. Coonamble Show (May), Rodeo (June), Gold Cup Race Meeting (Oct).
