Coonawarra is a hugely successful wine growing area in the Limestone Coast region of SA. Located 373 km s-e of Adelaide and almost on the Victorian border, this area has over 20 vineyards and wineries nearby. Scottish immigrant, John Riddoch established his large property, Yallum and in 1890 subdivided 810 ha into smaller vineyard and orchard holdings of 4-12 ha each. He named his enterprise the Coonawarra Fruit Colony and so, the Coonawarra wine region was born.
