Corowa is a typical Murray River service town located 614 km s-w of Sydney on NSW/Vic border. The Wiradjuri Aborigines originally inhabited the area and white settlers arrived from 1830s. The town grew steadily due to increasing river traffic and gold discoveries nearby (1876). Corowa is considered the ‘birthplace of Federation’ as it was here that tax-free trade was proposed and implemented resulting in the establishment of the Australian Commonwealth in 1901. The Federation Museum is devoted to this. Main industries include wool, vineyards, timber, cereals & a piggery. Corowa markets 1st Sun each month. Federation Festival (Jan), Federation Car Show (Feb).
