Corryong is a small picturesque High Country township 448 km n-e of Melbourne. Home of The Man from Snowy River as one of its locals, Jack Riley (buried in Cooyong cemetery) is said to have inspired the famous poem by Banjo Patterson (1890). Corryong is also known as Victoria’s gateway to the Snowy Mts and Kosciuszko NP over the NSW border. The settlement, surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and Alpine streams, is an ideal setting for many outdoor activities (bushwalking, horseriding, canoeing, whitewater rafting, trout fishing). The town’s name is Aboriginal for ‘bandicoot’. The nearby Burrowa-Pine Mountain NP is also of great interest. Man from Snowy River Bush Festival (Apr).
