Croydon Qld 4871 (Pop 180)

Croydon is an historic Gulf Savannah settlement located 1 895 km n-w of Brisbane. Settled in 1880s by pastoralists, gold was discovered soon after resulting in miners arriving in their thousands. The gold was exhausted by 1920s but fortunately a processing plant was established in 1980s at Tabletop. The charming Gulflander railway (Croydon and Normanton) was completed in 1891 and still operates today - departing Normanton Wed (8.30am) arriving Croydon (1.30pm) and departing Croydon Thurs (8.30am) arriving Normanton (1.30pm). Croydon boasts a number of National Trust-listed buildings beautifully restored and preserved together with an historic cemetery (2 km south). Lake Belmore (5 km north) ideal watersports and birdwatching spot.
