Deniliquin is a pretty Edward River township 734 km s-w of Sydney via the Hume & Riverina Hwys. It was originally inhabited by the Barapa Baraba Aborigines, who named the area ‘Denilakoon’ to honour a local Aboriginal chief. Deniliquin developed into an important service centre for the surrounding pastoral stations. It sits in the centre of the largest irrigated area in Australia and has an important rice growing industry as well as wool, dairy products, grains, timber and several famous Merino sheep studs. Deniliquin markets 4th Sat each month. Sun Festival (Jan), Stampede (Easter), Play on the Plains Festival & Ute Muster (Sept/Oct). Rodeo (Dec).

Peppin Heritage Centre
, George St (formerly the Public School 1879)interesting museum focusing on the wool industry. There is an intact classroom and the original Wanganella lock-up gaol. Open (9am-4pm) weekdays and (11am-2pm) weekends. Waring Gardens, Cressy St originally a chain of lagoons established as a park (1881) with numerous 19th century palms, willows and figs. Island Sanctuary, Cressy St many kangaroos, possums, bats and vast birdlife. Australian Ricegrower's Cooperative Mill, Barham Rd Southern Hemisphere's largest rice mill.  Visitor centre open (9.30am-12) and (2pm-4pm) weekdays.

 

Nearby:  
Lawson's Syphon (7 km east) & Steven’s Weir (25 km west) impressive irrigation works. Peppin's 'Morago' Homestead (40 km n-w) (1861) comprising 360 000 acres with 170 000 sheep and still operating as a major ram stud.
