Dunkeld is a small rural centre at the southern end of the Grampians. Located 287 km west of Melbourne, the stunning surrounding landscape is dominated by Mt Wuragarri (548 m) (formerly Mt. Sturgeon) and Mt Murdadjoog (827 m) (formerly Mt Abrupt). Early pastoral settlement began in 1830s with the township renamed from Mt Sturgeon after a Scottish town.  The district has an excellent wool production and has been favoured by many artists over the years for its picturesque setting. Dunkeld Cup (Nov), Dunkeld Festival (Dec). 

Tourist Attractions & Info:
Dunkeld Historic Museum, Templeton St: housed within an old church, there are fascinating displays & memorabilia relating to Aboriginal history, the wool industry and early explorers and settlers. Open weekends. Botanic Gardens, opposite Information Centre.

Nearby:
Lake Bolac (35 km east): small town and freshwater lake popular for fishing, swimming and boating. A yachting regatta held here each Easter. Grampians NP (8 km north): southern end of the park features a scenic drive past Freshwater Lake Reserve a popular recreational area.
