Eighty Mile Beach is a spectacular stretch of coastline in NW WA. It extends between Cape Missiessy (north) to Cape Keraudren (south) for a distance of 220 km with a width of about 100 m and is bounded by the Great Sandy Desert (east).
Eighty Mile Beach is located 1 910 km n-e of Perth halfway between Broome and Port Hedland. The surrounding land is traditional indigenous territory currently under pastoral leases for use as cattle stations. Some 1 750 sq km of the beach was Ramsar-listed in 1990 to ensure the conservation of this area’s unique wetlands and its over 400 000 migratory shorebirds who arrive annually to feed, breed and nest.
