Comments[0] Elcho Island

Elcho Island

Elcho Island, part of the Wessel Islands, is located off Arnhem Land’s n-e coast (NT). Measuring about 6 km (width) x 55 km (length), it is just a couple of kms from the mainland and has its own airport. Elcho’s main settlement is the large Galiwin’ku Aboriginal community consisting of several tribes and many dialects. Together with numerous outstations, the island’s population is over 2 000 including a number of non indigenous residents. Originally a Methodist mission, Galiwin’ku has been operating independently since 1970s, has a total alcohol ban and visitors require permits (Northern Land Council). Elcho Island proudly retains its traditional and cultural heritage and inspired the song, ‘My Island Home’
