Elliston is a lovely Eyre Peninsula holiday town surrounded by rolling hills and a striking coastline. It is located 695 km n-w of Adelaide, has excellent swimming and fishing beaches and was named after an early writer, Ellen Liston - Ellie’s Town in 1878. Abalone diving in 1960s only lasted a short time before supplies were depleted. Tourism and fishing sustain the township today. Sculptures on the Cliff (odd numbered years Mar-May), Australian Salmon Fishing Competition (June-Aug).
Tourist Attractions & Info:
Jetty (1889) restored and heritage-listed. Town Hall Mural, Main St depicts the area’s history on the Southern Hemisphere’s largest mural.

Elliston’s Great Ocean View spectacular 2km coastal drive to Anxious Bay with superb views which passes one of Australia’s best surfing beaches, Blackfellows. Ancient Fossils thought to be over 100 000 years old and located on the Wellington and Wellesley Points headlands of Waterloo Bay. Locks Well (12 km s-e) a long stairwell leads to a great fishing and surfing beach with a stunning lookout. Lake Newland Conservation Park (26 km north) a 9 000 ha park that is home to the 20 km long salt lake which is the Peninsula’s most extensive wetland. Many species of waterbirds are found here with recreational fishing allowed and 4WD access only around the lake. Talia Caves (45 km north) dramatic surf pounded caves.
