Escort Rock - Memorial to gold robbery
Eugowra NSW 2806 (Pop 650)
Eugowra is an interesting Central West township located 338 km west of Sydney. Original inhabitants, the Wiradjuri Aborigines named the area meaning ‘the place where the sand washes down the hill’. Pastoralists arrived in 1830s and the town was established in 1860s. It was at this time that Australia’s largest gold robbery was carried out at Eugowra Rocks by renowned bushrangers Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall. Rugged Nangar NP is nearby and popular for bushwalks and rockclimbing. Mainstays of the local economy include granite (a large amount of which was used in the construction of Parliament House), a sawmill and produce supplies. Eugowra Show (Sept).
