Fitzroy Island is a picturesque island ideal for bushwalking. Located 30 km north east of Cairns, the majority of the island is national park. Traditionally of great importance to the Gunghandji Aborigines, it also supported a 19th century sea cucumber industry, was a quarantine station for Chinese miners and an Aboriginal mission. The 340 ha island offers 4 main excellent walking trails (SecretGarden, NudeyBeach, Lighthouse Road, Summit Trail) as well as great swimming and snorkeling around the coast. Access is by catarmaran from Cairns.
