Foster is a pretty Gippsland town located 172 km s-e of Melbourne. It is surrounded by a rich grazing and dairying district and was originally called Stockyard Creek. The coming of the railway (1892) helped ensure the town’s future as a rural service centre.

Historic Museum, Main St housed within the old post office with interesting historic displays and memorabilia. Kaffir Hill Walk begins in the town carpark and traces numerous goldmining sites.

Corner Inlet Marine & Coastal Park (33 km south) 1 550 ha park containing a complex network of mudflats, mangroves and seagrass meadows. There is a profusion of migratory birds, seafloor animals and plants together with a number of Aboriginal shell middens. Fishing, boating and kayaking popular pursuits. Foster North Lookout (6 km n-w) excellent Corner Inlet and Wilsons Promontory views. Turtons Creek (18 km north) area rich in gold, fern gullies and lyrebirds. Beaches include Port Frankling (12 km s-e), Waratah Bay (34 km s-w) Walkerville (36 km s-w). Wilsons Promontory NP (32 km south) over 50 000 ha of fern gullies, rock formations, rainforests, swamps, 130 km of coastline and abundant wildlife. ‘The Prom’ was declared a national park in 1898 and is today one of Victoria’s most popular.
