Gawler is a Barossa Valley rural service centre scenically located on the North & South Parra Rivers. It is one of SA’s most important historic towns and its proximity to Adelaide (41 km south) has resulted in growing numbers of daily commuters. Established in 1839 and named after Governor Gawler, this very attractive town is today dominated by wheat farms and vineyards. Gawler South markets (Sun am), Gawler Gourmet & Heritage Festival (Easter).

Historic Gawler
(40 sites) includes the Old Bushman Inn (1840s), Congregational Church (1851), Kingsford Hotel (1858), old Telegraph Station (1859), Anglican Church (1864), Post Office (1866), old Gawler Institute (1870), Town Hall (1878), Court House (1881), Catholic Church (1897). Gawler Museum, Murray St housed in the old Telegraph Station documents the area’s pioneering history. Closed Mon/Sat. Dead Man's Pass, Murray St pleasant recreational area with walking trails and so named because a corpse was found here in 1837.

(15 km north) located within the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy campus features pioneering farm implements and working machinery. Open Wed/3rd Sun each month. Freeling (17 km n-e) interesting historical rural township.
