Gin Gin Qld 4671 (Pop 900)
Gin Gin is a pleasant Coral Coast region township 347 km n-w of Brisbane. It is well located on the main road (Bruce Hwy) between Brisbane and Cairns and just 49 km s-w of bustling Bundaberg. Settled by pastoralists in 1840s, Gin Gin is today surrounded by some of Qld’s oldest cattle stations. Wild Scotchman Festival (Mar) celebrates the life of James McPherson, a notorious but non-violent local bushranger. Of interest in the area are Goodnight Scrub NP (10 km south) for bushwalks, scenic outlooks and over 60 butterfly species; Lake Monduran (24 km n-w) for watersports and fishing; Boolboonda Tunnel (27 west) Southern Hemisphere’s longest unsupported tunnel.
