Gulgong is a charming, well preserved historic Central West goldrush town 296 km n-w of Sydney. First inhabited by the Wiradjuri Aborigines who named the area meaning ‘deep waterhole’, gold discoveries in 1860s lead to the town’s founding a decade later. When goldmining declined, it was replaced with wheat and wool production. Gulgong’s economy today is sustained by a coal mining, wine, tourism and rural industries. Of particular heritage interest is the Prince of Wales Opera House, Gulgong Pioneer Museum and Henry Lawson Centre with the stunning Goulburn River NP nearby.
