Herberton Qld 4772 (Pop 970)

Herberton is an attractive Tropical North township located 1 680 km n-w of Brisbane. Sitting on the Atherton Tablelands at 1000 m and 93 km s-w of Cairns, it was the area’s first settlement and most important tin mining settlement. Established in 1880s with the discovery of tin which also helped establish other Tableland communities, Herberton was soon booming with a population of over 8 000. Sadly the mine closed in 1978 leaving the town as more of a commuter town for the region’s mining workers. Herberton has an interesting historical village and museum and is surrounded by the Herberton Range Forest Reserve and Mt Hypipamee NP featuring a 70 m wide volcanic crater, Dinner Falls and abundant rainforest birdlife and wildlife. Tin Festival (Sept).
