Home Hill is a Townsville region settlement 1 238 km n-w of Brisbane. Sitting on the Bruce Hwy, it is 11 km south of its larger neigbour Ayr, to which it is linked by the famous Silver Link Bridge (1 097 m). Home Hill is predominantly a service centre for the surrounding sugarcane district which was originally part of the Inkerman Downs cattle station. When the land was given over to growing sugar cane and a mill was established (1914), a fledgling settlement emerged attracting farmers and workers. A more recent industry that is also thriving is rice growing as evidenced by the huge rice silos in town with exports to SE Asia. Of interest in the area is Groper Creek fishing village, (crabs, barramundi, prawns) and Inkerman Hill lookout. Markets 2nd Sat each month. Harvest Festival (Nov).
