Comments[0] Houtman Abrolhos Islands

Houtman Abrolhos Islands WA

The Houtman Abrolhos Islands are located off WA’s Coral Coast. Sitting 65 km west of Geraldton, they comprise three groups of 40 islands spanning a distance of over 100 km. First sighted by Frederick Houtman (1619), Abrolhos is Portuguese meaning ‘keep good watch’ an apt name for these dangerous waters responsible for about 20 shipwrecks. The most famous of these is the Batavia (1629) now a popular diving site at Morning Reef within the Wallabi group. The islands provide the main source of rock lobsters for a thriving industry, excellent recreational fishing and a rich variety of marine, bird and wildlife. Access is via boat (30 min from Geraldton) or plane/helicopter but there is no accommodation on the islands. Further information Tel (08) 9483 1111.
