Hughenden Qld 4821 (Pop 1 200)
Hughenden is a remote Outback settlement situated 1 429 km n-w of Brisbane. It sits on the Flinders River, Qld's longest and acts as the administrative/service centre for Flinders shire, one of Qld’s largest. White settlement began in 1860s and the advent of the railway (1905) assured Hughenden's future. Additionally, the discovery in 1963 of a Muttaburrasaurus dinosaur in Muttaburra (206 km south) attracted a great deal of interest and a 7 m replica is housed in the Flinders Discovery Centre. Stunning Porcupine Gorge NP (60 km north) contains a 'mini Grand Canyon'. Country Music Festival (Apr), Dinosaur Festival (Sept - even numbered years), Night Rodeo (Oct).
