Humpty Doo is an historic Top End region service centre near the Arhem Hwy. Located just 42 km s-e of Darwin, this proximity and recent commercial and residential development has transformed it into a commuter township for the capital. 19th century goldrushes resulted in large numbers of Chinese miners in the area and rice growing became an early successful industry. Rice-growing experiments during 1950s were famously and completely a disaster for a number of reasons (salinity, animals, poor management) and abandoned. Fortunately, mango growing has proved a much better option and Humpty Doo also boasts a honey farm. Also of interest: ‘Boxing Croc’; Graeme Gow’s Reptile World; Fogg Dam attracts vast birdlife.
