The Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest wine growing area, is situated 160 km north west of Sydney. Comprising over 60 wineries around the Pokolbin and Cessnock area alone, the Hunter region has a population of over 590 000 half of which live in Newcastle & Lake Macquarie. The Hunter Valley is one of the largest river valleys in NSW with coal mining still of major economic importance together with dairy & beef cattle and power generating. This major tourist destination is the 6th most visited in the country.
The area extends for about 150 km and is divided into the Upper Hunter (Merriwa, Aberdeen, Denman) and Lower Hunter (Broke, Pokolbin, Branxton, Greta, Kurri Kurri).
