Jamestown SA 5491 (Pop 1 480)

 

Jamestown is an interesting Clare Valley service town on the Belalie River 207 km north of Adelaide. Pastoralists settled the area in 1840s which was named in honour of the SA Governor, James Fergusson.  Today it supports local wool, cereal and timber industries. Jamestown Show (Oct).

Jamestown Railway Station Museum,
Mannanarie Rd housed within the old railway station (1878) featuring historic agricultural equipment and machinery, a railway carriage and local memorabilia & artefacts of a bygone era. Closed Wed. Historic Jamestown includes Commercial Hotel (1877), Belalie Hotel (1877), Anglican Church (1880) and minister’s house (1876), National Bank (1885).

Nearby:
Bundaleer Forest Reserve
(9 km south) was the world’s first plantation forest established 1876 and features a number of attractive walks, Maple (1.5 km), Scenic (4.6 km) and Conservator’s (4.6 km). Magnetic Hill (50 km return trip north via Black Rock) magnetic forces here can pull a car uphill!
