Karumba Qld 4891
Karumba is a small but important Gulf of Carpentaria fishing port on the Norman River 2 158 km n-w of Brisbane. A telegraph station was built on the town’s site in 1870s but ‘discovery’ of Karumba occurred much later in 1930s when it was used as a stopover point for the flying boats traveling between Australia and London. Karumba later became popular as a recreational fishing area followed by commercial fishing in 60s & 70s. Today the prawning and barramundi industries are the mainstays of the local economy. Surrounded by sections of dense mangrove swamps, birdlife here is prolific.
