Winter in the Snowies
Khancoban NSW 2642 (Pop 500)
Khancoban is a pretty Snowy Mts town 567 km s-w of Sydney. White settlement began (1830s) when it was known as Swampy Plains, but it remained an isolated and lonely settlement until the Snowy Mountains Authority built the Alpine Way (1956). Today this SMA town serves and maintains nearby power stations and Khancoban Dam and most of the town’s population is connected with the SMA. From Cooma (166 km east), one passes Thredbo Village, the beautiful Kosciuszko region and through winding mountains to just 13 kms short of the Victorian border.
