Kilmore Vic 3764
(Pop 3 500)

Kilmore is an expanding Macedon Ranges township due to its emergence as a Melbourne commuter settlement. Claimed to be Victoria’s oldest inland town with many fine historic buildings, it is located 80 km north of the capital via the Hume Freeway & Northern Hwy. First inhabited by the Woiwurung Aborigines, Europeans arrived in 1830s and Kilmore thrived due to its proximity to Melbourne and a gap in the Great Dividing Range and nearby gold discoveries. Kilmore boasts some interesting Ned Kelly history when his father was jailed here for 6 months (1865). Numerous horse racing events are hosted here including Kilmore Cup (Oct), Kilmore Harness Racing Carnival (Oct) together with the Celtic Festival (June), Highland Games (Nov), Agricultural Show (Dec).

Accommodation:
Kilmore has a couple of motels, 3 hotels, a B&B, holiday cottages and a caravan park. Visitor Information Centre: Library,
12 Sydney St. Tel (03) 5781 1319.
