Koo-wee-rup is a pretty Gippsland rural and residential centre 73 km s-e of Melbourne. Situated on the South Gippsland Hwy, the surrounding district is reclaimed swampland now flourishing with market gardens, dairying and principally asparagus production. Originally inhabited by the Bunurong Aborigines who named the area meaning ‘plenty of blackfish’, the area experienced many difficult years due to regular floods and difficult swampy conditions. However, eventually the district was drained, reclaimed and divided up for post WWI soldier settlement schemes.
