Lake Mountain Vic
Lake Mountain is located 120 km n-e of Melbourne in the Dandenong Ranges. At an elevation of 1 480 m, it is the capital’s main cross country skiing destination with 2 400 ha of skiable area. In total there are 37 km of cross country ski trails, 7 toboggan slopes and many hire and recreational facilities, but no accommodation. In the warmer months, bushwalking and bike riding are popular pursuits. Lake Mountain Summit Walk Loop Track (4 km) takes in 4 lookouts, snow gum woodlands, alpine heath and endless wildflowers. Also easily accessible are the pretty villages of the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley with its many excellent wineries. NOTE: This area was tragically devastated by bushfires in February 2009 but continues to recover and rebuild.
