Leigh Creek SA 5731 (Pop 660)   

Leigh Creek is an Outback coal company mining town located 553 km north of Adelaide. Named after its first settler, Harry Leigh in 1856, coal discovered here in 1888. This modern township was relocated in 1982 from its former site (13 km north) as it was sitting on a large coal seam.

turnoff 14 km n (then 3 km down road to coalmine). Aroona Dam (4 km west) a pretty recreation area within a steep-sided gorge with coloured walls. Beltana (27 km south) historic town that hosts the Picnic Race Meeting & Gymkhana each Sept. Ochre Cliffs (44 km north) where Aborigines sourced their different coloured painting ochres. Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges NP (64 km east) arid and isolated 125 000 ha park of deep gorges and rugged ranges. A number of 2WD & 4WD driving tracks and challenging bushwalking trails.
