Longreach Qld 4730 (Pop 3 800)
Longreach is an interesting Outback town on the Thomson River 1 178 km n-w of Brisbane. White settlement began in 1860s and the town’s name refers to the ‘long reach’ of its river. Qantas established its operational base here in 1922. Longreach is located within one of Qld's richest beef and wool districts. Easter in the Outback (Easter), Outback Muster & Drovers Reunion (May).

Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame & Outback Heritage Centre, Landsborough Hwy excellent and fascinating look at Australian life through the ages from Aboriginal art, early pioneering history, displays, photographs and artifacts. Qantas Founders Outback Museum, Landsborough Hwy located within the restored original 1922 hangar with historic aviation displays and an aeroplane replica. Jacksons Weapons Museum, Cassowary St war memorabilia museum. Open daily (2pm-8pm). Free entry. Powerhouse Museum, Swan St agricultural machinery on display and much of local history interest. Botanical Gardens, Landsborough Hwy scenic walking/cycling trails.
Nearby:
Lochern NP (140 km s-w) picturesque park in which the Thomson River, stretching for 20 km, results in the many waterholes located throughout the park that attract large numbers of birdlife. The 16 km Bluebush Lagoon circuit is an excellent way to see the Mitchell grasses, coolibah trees and a sub species of turtle. Best visited during the Dry Season. Thomson River (4.6 km n-w) excellent swimming, fishing and bushwalking. Starlight's Lookout (64 km n-w) magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and thought to be the resting place of famous bushranger, Capt Starlight.
