Maitland lies in the agricultural heart of the Yorke Peninsula. Located 167 km n-w of Adelaide, this pretty inland service town is laid out in the same elaborate radiating squares as SA’s capital. The local Aborigines named the area ‘mau waltu’ meaning white flint which was very common here. Maitland was proclaimed in 1872. Open (2pm-4pm) Sun & holidays. Historic Maitland includes St John’s Anglican church (1876), Council of Yorke Peninsula building (1908).
