Mallacoota is a quiet East Gippsland holiday destination located 515 km east of Melbourne. Pastoral settlement began in 1840s with commercial fishing following from 1880s. Today tourism and abalone fishing sustain Mallacoota's economy together with some light industry. Festival of the Great Southern Ocean (Easter).

Capt Stephenson’s Point,
Allan Dr where a large Aborginal shell midden was located together was stone and bone tools and animal remains constituting one of Victoria’s richest archaeological coastal sites.

 

Nearby:
Surf Beaches include Bastion Point (2 km south) and Bekta (5 km south). Croajingalong NP (south & west) covers 87 500 ha and spans 100 km of wilderness coastline. Protecting areas of lush rainforest, heath lands, granite peaks and estuaries, there are beautiful bush tracks, safe river swimming and good fishing and canoeing conditions. Historic lighthouse at Point Hicks. Gipsy Point (16 km n-w) leisurely little village surrounded by forests and overlooking the Genoa River. Gabo Island (11 km east offshore)2.5 km long granite outcrop with an historic lighthouse (1862).
